Rwanda is a truly beautiful country, known for its lush green landscapes, forested hills, and dramatic volcanoes. Most visitors come for the famous mountain gorillas, but there’s so much more to see—like the peaceful and often overlooked Twin Lakes of Ruhondo and Burera.
These two lakes sit side by side in the northeastern part of Rwanda, close to the town of Musanze. They were formed long ago when Mount Sabyinyo erupted, and lava blocked part of the Nyabarongo River, creating the calm, scenic waters we see today. Surrounded by hills and small villages, the lakes offer a quiet escape and a chance to experience Rwanda’s natural beauty in a different way.
Burera and Ruhondo are called "twin lakes" because they are located right next to each other, separated by only a narrow strip of land, and they were formed at the same time from the same volcanic activity. They are similar in size, shape, and elevation, and they’re both fed by the same water sources.
Even though they are two separate lakes, they are so close and closely linked in origin and appearance that locals and visitors often refer to them as a single pair just like twins.
Lakes Burera and Ruhondo are located in the Northern Province of Rwanda, near the town of Musanze, which is also the gateway to Volcanoes National Park. They lie at the foot of the Virunga Volcanoes, close to the borders with Uganda and the Democratic Republic of Congo.
The lakes are nestled in a scenic mountainous area, surrounded by steep hills, small villages, and terraced farmlands. This location not only offers beautiful views but also makes the lakes a peaceful stop for travelers exploring northern Rwanda or visiting the mountain gorillas in nearby Volcanoes National Park.
