Akagera National Park

Akagera National Park, established in 1934, is one of Central Africa’s largest protected wetlands

In 2010, the Rwandan Government partnered with African Parks and the Rwanda Development Board to help manage the park, aiming to strengthen conservation efforts and use tourism as a tool for economic growth. Since then, thanks to effective management and focused wildlife protection, Akagera has seen a remarkable revival. Lions were reintroduced in 2015, followed by eastern black rhinos in 2017 and 2019. In 2021, 30 southern white rhinos were brought in, and in June 2025, another 70 were added under the Rhino Rewild Initiative.
